Gloss lamination applies a very thin gloss plastic film to the surface of a cardboard sheet.

Offset print is still applied to the coated cardboard stock, but the gloss laminate then highlights colours even further - making it a popular choice for full colour photographic designs.

The effect is very common in gatefold wallet and digipack disc packaging and inexpensive to add at ~ $0.20 per unit.
